The Auroras are Calling + Möbius Study #1

Alice Palmer

Alice Palmer is a multidisciplinary artist based in Derbyshire. Before moving into the art world, Palmer had a knitwear company, showcasing innovative fashion collections in London, Paris, Tokyo and New York.

‘The Auroras’ inspiration comes directly from the Aurora Borealis, each piece consisting of over 200 strands of yarn, all carefully picked out and placed to create an array of colour which brings a sense of calm and wonder.

“I have a longing to travel to research colour for my art and Iceland is at the top of my list. I have always been fascinated with the sky, the colours formed through different wavelengths and the atmospheric optical effects caused by rainbows, mirages and auroras.”

Möbius Study #1 is the first of a small series of works exploring the one-sided surface discovered by Johann Benedict Listing and August Ferdinand Möbius in 1858.

“I have always been fascinated by the topological space of this object, and wanted to create my own variations of the möbius strip through painted line and hanging yarn.”
